Create a Zero Waste Origami Bag from Vintage Furnishing Textiles.
Workshop by sustainable designers Aurore Thibout and Laurence Teillet.
Saturday 1st December - 10.30am to 5.30pm - 7 hours workshop at Elemental Studio, London Fields E8.
Exploring the concept of Zero Waste pattern cutting, you will reuse hand-picked vintage furnishing textiles to design and make your bespoke Upcycled Bag.
Combining traditional skills with a contemporary vision, you will experiment with the materials and learn new creative possibilities to make an original, one-of-a-kind piece.
( The Hobo bag uses Origami and folding techniques to create deep practical pockets with a large handle. Each participant will make their own unique bag composed with their favourite vintage fabrics ).
While taking the time for yourself to enjoy the power of making, you will also be able to discover the work of the lead designers, focusing on a more ethical and sustainable fashion system.
Skills: No prior experience necessary. You will learn some basic sewing skills including pattern cutting, using the sewing machine, selected fabric manipulation techniques such as patchwork and creative upcycling…
Cost: £120 inc. materials, snacks and refreshments.
Feel free to bring your own sewing machine.
Elemental Studio is located in London Fields, right by the vibrant Broadway Market with many cafes and independent creative shops, close to the park and Regents canal. it is a vast modern working space, very bright and well equiped with a private courtyard.

THE DESIGNERS
Aurore and Laurence met several years ago in Paris when working on the Artisanal Collection at Maison Martin Margiela. Since then, they have taught together at a number of masterclasses and workshops in Fashion and Textile institutions in the USA, France and Canada. These two workshops are a great creative and learning opportunity for anyone interested in conscious, handmade and upcycled products.
Aurore Thibout is a textile and fashion designer and visual artist living in Paris. In her work, she captures the passage of time and explores the concept of memory through creating limited editions and unique pieces. Melding tradition and innovation, her creative process begins with selecting materials and involves recycling antique fabrics and using natural dyes. Thibout travels all over the world to teach workshops and materclasses, recently completing projects in Taiwan and Japan.
Her collection ‘Colour of Time’ reflects cultural heritage from past centuries through to the present day using beautiful naturally dyed materials.
Laurence Teillet is a multi disciplinary designer focused on sustainable textiles and fashion. Designing with a conscience: being aware of her impact in today’s society by re-using waste materials to experiment, to refine and redevelop new types of fabrics and possibilities for clothing. After working for many years in the fashion industry in Paris and London, she is currently the Artistic Director at Elemental. She is leading experimental masterclasses and workshops to transmit her experience, to share her creativity and to highlight the importance of sustainable design in Fashion and Textiles.

We learnt how to make a 'hobo' bag using vintage fabrics.The teachers were both very skilled and helpful. Brilliant venue with plenty of light and space - near to the fashionable Broadway market. My husband who had never used a sewing machine came home with a beautiful bag and was so happy - thanks ladies.

I am very pleased with the experience. It was intense for a beginner like myself but the learning process was smooth, explained carefully and kindly. Laurence was very helpful and patient. We work through all the process from choosing our colours and patterns from second hand materials to completing the piece. This involved measuring, cutting, ironing, preparing folds, adjusting the sewing machine to the thickness of the material we chose, feeding the sewing machine with the chosen colour thread, and of course sewing. Each stages were well explained and demonstrated by Aurore or Laurence. I came out of the workshop tired but proud and happy of my achievements. More over I left with new knowledges tested and I believe I can now engaged in more complex designs. Hopefully Laurence will decide to open a new workshop on how to draw designs and patterns with in mind the zero-waste principles!

I really enjoyed it. It was fun and educative. It was intense because of the complexity of the bag and techniques that weren’t familiar to me – an authentic ‘challenge’ - but it pushed me as a maker-beginner, and so gained a firm insight into real-world textile and fashion construction methods in a single afternoon session, i.e. the material and technical rudimental learnings I signed up for…
Working with you and Aurore particularly inspired me because of your commercial and professional couture and atelier backgrounds, but also your evidential ideas and ideals around zero waste practices and culture. As a fellow craftsperson, or maker, to use the current terminology, working alongside both of you reinforced how important I know it is to be around skilled artisans; see and learn how they handle materials, machinery and tools of the trade: it was a pleasure to be with you making stuff.

I had a great time during the workshop. It was run by highly professional people and and I was really taken by the zero waste concept. We had loads of great vintage fabrics to pick from. I was so immersed in the project that time flew by. It was almost a meditative experience and great to do something out of the ordinary. The atmosphere was focused in the studio yet relaxed. Highly recommended.Jo.
23/10/2018The workshop was brilliant! 2 teachers taking us through the make of a very ‘couture’ tote bag, large size, made of 3 recup vintage fabrics supplied at the workshop. The bag includes large folded exterior pockets, it is super practical and stylish. People have stopped me on the street several time already to find out where it came from! Would love to attend the 0 waste dress workshop next!Carina.Spaces are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. Once the money is paid, your place is secured.
